The Death: Uncle Monty welcomes the unfortunate Baudelaire family into his home after their mistreatment at the hands of the villainous Count Olaf. However, posing as reptile expert Stefano, Olaf gets his revenge on the kids by killing their Uncle and attempting to blame it on one of the friendliest snakes known to mankind - The Incredible Deadly Viper.

Who Should Have Died Instead: Count Olaf

Uncle Monty is just so nice. The 2004 version of the books by Lemony Snicket puts Billy Connolly in the role as Montgomery Montgomery who proves to be everything the children did not have under Olaf: caring, sweet, kind and, above all, willing to put them first.

The film does a splendid job hitting you hard with Monty’s death. And you feel genuine sadness and devastation when Olaf ends up surviving and, worst of all, getting away with the murder of one of the film’s most popular and likeable characters. His attempts to blame it on the Viper fail to pay dividends and when he is rumbled, he flees off into the night and manages to evade capture, leading him to terrorise the children for one more act of the movie and 11 more books in total.

It would have been perfect to imagine the children living happily with Uncle Monty, who planned to take them on an incredible trip to Peru. Olaf’s schemes and villainy, coupled with Jim Carey’s good albeit slightly irritating portrayal, meant is it a downright injustice that his vile character was allowed to live on.

Sport and Film. I love them both. And I'm extremely lucky to write about two of my biggest passions in life. Most of the time, I'm at the Daily Express newspaper writing about football, tennis and F1. But, when I'm out of there, I let my imagination run wild and pen down my thoughts on the film series' I love. WhatCulture gives me the chance to write about the movie industry - an industry I really care about. And for that, I'm extremely grateful. And hope you, if you're reading this, enjoy what I think about stuff.
