Easily the most obscure film on the list and one that never actually saw the light of day, it still bears mentioning if only for the truly staggering number of lives that were lost.

Russian actor and director Sergei Bodrov Jr. had been working on a script for a film that was to be called The Messenger in English, and in 2002, the team flew out to Vladikavkaz in order to start shooting. After they had finished for the day, the Kolka–Karmadon rock-ice slide occurred.

This was a freak event where an avalanche, an ice slide and a huge amount of rock and mud fall all happened one after the other - each causing the next and snowballing into a truly terrifying natural disaster. Two entire villages were buried under the slurry after it swept down into the valley reaching estimated speeds of more than 60mph.

In total, one hundred and thirty five people died during the event, including Sergei and twenty-six other members of his filming team. Extensive search and rescue efforts were carried out in the affected area but failed to locate even a single survivor.
