10 More Movies Where The Reshoots Were Painfully Obvious
7. Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes
This one plays fast and loose with the definition of the term 'reshoot' because only additional audio footage was added to the final cut, but the stitches were left on show in much the same way as the other entries on this list.
In 1972's Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes, Caesar brings the curtain down with a dark speech about killing all humans. The lip-syncing is flawless and actor Roddy McDowall's voice sounds distorted by the mass of prosthesis attached to his face.
But midway through the address, there's a sharp tonal shift when the simian protagonist starts calling for peace between apes and humans. The lip-sync goes off kilter and McDowall no longer sounds all nasally.
When the censors refused to pass Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes with a PG certificate, the filmmakers had to make some concessions, and one of them was toning down Caesar's speech. McDowall recorded some extra dialogue and it was spliced into the final cut rather haphazardly.
Reshoots, or to be more specific, the lack of them was to blame here. There was no budget remaining to film extra scenes, so fresh audio was awkwardly dubbed in during post-production instead.
