10 MORE Times The MCU Betrayed Your Trust

9. Ronan's Return (Captain Marvel)

This will be the first, but not the only returning villain on this list that led to disappointed fans. To start this trend we will look at Ronan the Accuser, who after underwhelming in 2014 returned to MCU screens with a fizzle in Captain Marvel.

Lee Pace’s villain was defeated relatively easily in Guardians of the Galaxy to say he held an Infinity Stone, but returned in 2019 to show his villainous ways back in the 1990s. This was before he met Thanos, and before he decided to decimate Xandarian culture.

More importantly however, this was a chance for the villain to redeem himself. As a big part of the reason the MCU earned itself a reputation for creating poor antagonists, Ronan’s chance for redemption in Captain Marvel was completely wasted.

For starters, he barely appeared in the movie at all, and when he did he was essentially another on the same level as Yon-Rogg, adding nothing to the movie and doing nothing to further his character. Instead of getting fans’ hopes up for a rejuvenated version of the character, maybe Marvel should have just left him in the dust on Xandar.
