5. Trainspotting
Some films suggest that taking drugs- whether popping a pill or stuffing your face with 'shrooms- is your guaranteed gateway to a higher state of consciousness. Swirling colours, slowing down time...that sort of thing. Trainspotting, however, is not one of those films. Instead, it tells the caustic, cautionary tale of Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his fellow heroin addicts trapped in the slums of Eighties Edinburgh. After Allison (Susan Vidler ) is horrified to discover that her baby daughter Dawn has died from neglect, this tragedy preys on the group's already poisoned minds. And so when Renton is forced through cold turkey by his parents, he is locked in his room with nothing but his thoughts. Naturally, he begins to hallucinate; first seeing his friends appear at the foot of his bed and, then, in the film's most shocking scene, a baby crawling on his
ceiling. As it shuffles directly above Renton's face, it twists its neck to look him in the eye, before suddenly falling and bringing the whole nightmare to a terrifying end.
