10 More Upcoming Movies That Are Already Doomed
4. Megalopolis
One of the most fascinating - if surely ill-fated - projects in post-production right now is Megalopolis, the epic sci-fi drama from the legendary Francis Ford Coppola.
The film, revolving around the rebuilding of New York City following a destructive catastrophe, has been Coppola's passion project for more than 40 years. With the filmmaker struggling to secure funding for his ambitious career coda, though, many assumed it'd simply never come to fruition.
But in one of the all-time baller moves ever made by a master artist, Coppola decided to sell off a huge chunk of his wine empire and fund the film with $120 million of his own money, such is the 84-year-old director's desire to finally see his vision brought to the big screen. And he's certainly amassed one hell of a cast to help him, with the likes of Adam Driver, Forest Whitaker, Nathalie Emmanuel, Laurence Fishburne, Aubrey Plaza, Shia LaBeouf, Jason Schwartzman, Talia Shire, Dustin Hoffman, and Giancarlo Esposito involved.
While there's a lot of justified excitement about what will probably be Coppola's final film, the risks speak for themselves. Conventional funding avenues wanted nothing to do with this for possibly good reason, there were reports of a troubled shoot, and let's be honest: Coppola hasn't made a truly good film in over 25 years.
It's easy to picture Megalopolis being a wildly polarising piece of work that doesn't even get close to turning a profit, though at this stage in Coppola's life and career, he might see just delivering the damn thing as mission accomplished.
