10 Most Ambitious War Films Ever Made

2. Lawrence Of Arabia

The Longest Day 1962
Columbia Pictures

Directed by David Lean, Lawrence of Arabia follows the exploits of British army officer T.E. Lawrence. The latter was influential in the Arab Revolt against the Ottoman Empire.

Production of the film took place mostly on location in Jordan and Morocco. However, filming had to be moved to Spain after several crew members became ill. The original plan for filming included scenes at the historic site of Petra. Because of the relocation, the attack on Aqaba had to be reconstructed in a dried riverbed in Southern Spain. This included the construction of 300 buildings that were meticulously based on the town's appearance in 1917.

Lawrence of Arabia was also one of the first films produced in SUPER PANAVISION! Which allowed for the incredibly wide 70mm shots the film has become known for.
