Katie Holmes was not the right choice to play this character. Its not necessarily her fault that she came across as annoying but the idea of the girlish Holmes taking on the entire mob just never felt believable. Beyond that, she often felt too preachy for her own good and the idea of chastising Bruce for wanting to kill his parents murderer is a little ridiculous. His anger is pretty righteous and she doesnt really have a say in how he feels about Joe Chill. Her condescension is completely unneeded and unhelpful and its kind of unclear why Bruce likes her so much when she clearly fails to have empathy for his own struggles. Too that point, its almost annoying that there even is a love interest in the film. The character simply exists to fulfill no other purpose than to give Bruce someone to pine after. As a result, her character feels superfluous and her actions unnecessary. She still wasnt perfect in The Dark Knight but Maggie Gyllenhaal grounded her a lot better and made her actions much more tolerable.
