Even though horror films tend to be rebooted more than any genre, they rarely surpass the original. Carrie, Poltergeist, Wicker Man, and Psycho are among a handful of movies that were adapted into disastrous remakes. Because of this, it's rarely a good idea to redo a great movie.

However, redoing a terrible movie like Firestarter makes sense since it has compelling characters and an intriguing premise. The story centres around a girl called Charlie who can set things on fire with her mind. When government agents try to utilise her power for their own agenda, Charlie's father hides her away from society. Although the novel was nominated for multiple literary awards, the film adaptation was dreadful, with King himself calling it "one of the worst of the bunch".

But because the book was heavily praised, this story deserves a second chance. That's why it's reassuring to learn another adaptation of Firestarter starring Zac Efron will be released later this year. Details are scarce about the production but let's hope it's better than its predecessor. (Even if it isn't, it can't be worse than the god-awful sequel, Firestarter 2: Rekindled.)
