4. Cloverfield's Reveal - Cloverfield

The trailers for Cloverfield remain one of Hollywood's greatest marketing coups of the last 20 years - if not ever.

The J.J. Abrams-produced monster movie was shot in secret before a largely context-devoid teaser trailer was dropped in cinemas out of nowhere in 2007. And to Paramount's credit, they kept the trailers enticingly ambiguous all the way to release, refusing to reveal precisely what the creature was or what it looked like, ensuring that audiences just had to turn up and find out for themselves on the big screen.

It's important to note that Abrams was basically considered the master of the "mystery box" at this point in time, largely due to the success of his TV show Lost, ensuring Cloverfield and its associated lore had a sizable following long before the film actually came out. And though most of Cloverfield conceals the creature from full view - likely for budgetary reasons above all else - we do get a few prolonged glimpses at the big guy later on.

Whether audiences felt it was worth all the hype, though, is a more divisive matter.
