3. It Comes At Night
Release Date: 9 June
Released by A24, the arthouse genre label that scored big with last year’s The Witch, It Comes At Night premiered at the Overlook Film Festival to great acclaim, with one critic calling the film “a dreamy, dreadful descent into disquieting darkness” (and alliteration, no doubt).
In short, Trey Edward Shult’s film is the perfect antidote to the usual formulaic pictures that clog multiplexes during the summer. The always reliable Joel Edgerton (The Gift) plays a man keeping his family safe from an unspecified threat in an isolated cabin whose authority is challenged by the unexpected arrival of a group of strangers.
Pitch your expectations somewhere between 10 Cloverfield Lane and Cabin Fever (the original, not the remake) and you’ll have a good time with this minimalist thriller, which could be the breakout hit of 2017.
