3. Blood Test - The Thing
An age old classic from John Carpenter, The Thing has long stood the test of time as one of the best horror movies put to screen, and that accolade is absolutely well earned from its plentiful nail-biting sequences.
Of course, nothing is quite as stomach churning as the infamous blood test scene, which pulls together all of the insidious trappings of The Thing and puts them front and centre to deal with. As MacReady decides to test the blood of all trapped at an Antarctic Research base to discern who has been assimilated by an alien creature, the atmosphere thickens to an unbearable point - so cloying you could poke a piece of heated copper wire through it.
One by one, he takes blood samples and assesses whether they are extraterrestrial, slowly revealing that any suspected of alien antics are actually clear. That is, until he reaches Palmer. Then all hell breaks loose.
It's expertly crafted tension wrung out to its most horrific degree, and the resulting monster that bursts forth amongst a bunch of restrained men only makes the payoff that much more heart-attack worthy.
