The mystery of Star-Lord’s father is one of the biggest lingering plot threads that Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2 plans to answer. James Gunn has been upfront that not only will it be addressed, but that it's going to be a different character than in the comics. Considering the amount of notable cosmic heroes in the Marvel Universe, the actual contenders for such a role are numerous.

Based on Quill's ability to handle the Orb, we know his father is of some power. He’s also noted to travel in the same circles as Yondu and the Nova Corps refer to him as being of an unknown race. That's not much to go on, and could suggest Adam Warlock, the Beyonder, or even Richard Rider.

Despite these possibilities, rumours insist instead that his father will be none other than the original Captain Marvel, the Kree hero known as Mar-Vell. The character will certainly have been aged a little to fit with Kurt Russell, but beyond that it would be easy to stay true to him and work him into the Guardians' world.

Mar-Vell's inclusion would line up with the information we know and the character is certainly notable enough to warrant inclusion into the MCU, especially because of his ties to the other Captain Marvel that's set to get her own film.
