The best horror franchises to terrify you for hours.

Horror has always been the perfect genre for studios to pursue franchises. If a horror movie is released, you can rest assured it's going to get at least one sequel and an army of spin-offs to keep audiences busy.

This isn't always a great thing - The Conjuring Universe is already showing signs of serious fatigue, but there's no hint it'll be put out of its misery any time soon - but a lot of the time, horror franchises are nothing but a whole heap of fun, designed to terrify and stretch their often creative premises to new heights with every film.

From influential slasher classics to sci-fi masterpieces, found footage trailblazers to incredibly bizarre horror-comedies, the following 10 movie franchises are some of the finest on offer, despite some slight flaws, and are all best viewed late at night, the lights dimmed and the terror heightened.

With that in mind, here are the 10 most binge-watchable horror movie franchises of all time, ready to sink your teeth into.

10. Paranormal Activity

Chucky Child's Play
Paramount

Number of films: 8.

Paranormal Activity debuted in 2007 and breathed new life into the found footage genre. Though some of the films are far from being all-timers, when watched as a whole the series makes for thrilling viewing, thanks in equal measure to its creepy atmosphere, simple set-up, and shocking bursts of violence.

Claustrophobic and moody, the films follow a group of unsuspecting characters through the use of security cameras as they are terrorised, stalked and eventually murdered by an unknown spectre in the dead of night.

Watched together, the first three films form an exciting look at the lives of two haunted sisters and their innocent families, whilst the rest of the series shifts perspective to other families throughout California and Nevada.

The purposefully ambiguous nature of the movies make Paranormal Activity one of horror's most unique offerings, and a franchise with enough jump scares and technical ingenuity to keep itself afloat during even its weaker moments (read: the sixth film).

With the latest instalment just released this October, there's never been a better time to jump in.
