10 Most Brutal Deaths In Harry Potter Movies

2. Scalded And Turned Into Rocks (Professor Quirrell)

While the later Harry Potter movies are often cited as being the darkest in the series, the earlier entries still have their fair share of "jeez, this is suitable for kids?" moments too.

And besides the absolutely horrifying Aragog sequence in Chamber Of Secrets, the most potentially-scarring moment for young audiences - and a damn brutal death in its own right - is Professor Quirrell's defeat at the end of The Philosopher's Stone.

After pulling off his turban to reveal that he has Lord Voldemort grafted onto the back of his head, Quirrell attempts to murder Harry in order to retrieve the Philosopher's Stone. Harry fights back, and - thanks to the protective charm left by his mother when she died for him - he's able to scald Quirrell's flesh, causing him to scream in agony.

But the poor Professor's pain doesn't end there! Oh no. Once his skin has been well and truly steamed, he crumbles into rocks and breaks apart, turning into a small pile of clothes and dust on the floor.

Harry's look of surprise at what his hands are capable of doing really does say it all: Quirrell had absolutely no idea what he was in for, and it's hard to comprehend just how much simultaneous confusion and anguish must've been coursing through his mind during his final, painful moments.

Danny has been with WhatCulture for almost nine years, and is currently Doctor Who Editor and WhoCulture Channel Manager, overseeing all of WhatCulture's Whoniverse coverage. He has been writing and video editing for 10+ years, and first got a taste for content creation after making his own Doctor Who trailers and uploading them to YouTube (they're admittedly a bit rusty by today's standards). If you need someone to recite every Doctor Who episode in order or to tell you about the making of 1988's Remembrance of the Daleks, Danny is the person to ask.
