If there’s one place to go to find terrifyingly twisted games in horror cinema, it’s the Saw franchise. Throughout all eight films to date (with a ninth and tenth on their way, too), each instalment is bursting with stomach-churning games that are more imaginatively grotesque than the last.

Engineered and masterminded by prolific killer John Kramer (Tobin Bell) under the alias Jigsaw (though the mantle has passed to others throughout the series’ convoluted narrative), each trap is designed as an ironic punishment for its victim.

The method behind the mutilating madness being the victim must sacrifice a part of themselves to keep their life, thus giving them a better appreciation for the life they have.

Some of the gory highlights have included players having to saw off their foot to escape their confinement; a mechanism that, when the timer runs out, will rip open their skull; rummaging through a pit of hundreds of needles for a key, or having their chest gradually crushed with each breath they take.

However, as gruesome as these “games” are, there’s always a way to win. The question is how far are the players willing to go to succeed.
