10 Most Confusing Horror Movies You'll Ever Watch

3. Annihilation

The Strange Colour of Your Body's Tears
Netflix

In Annihilation, biologist Lena (Natalie Portman) learns her husband Kane (Oscar Isaac) has gone missing after entering The Shimmer; a terrain that mutates all life within. Teaming up with three other scientists, Lena ventures in to find Kane and learn the origins behind this scientific phenomena.

In a nutshell, nobody will find Annihilation easy to follow. Even the producer, David Ellison, struggled with it, believing it was "too intellectual" and "too complicated".

Rather than spoon-feeding information, Alex Garland's trippy creature feature heavily relies on visual storytelling. The enigmatic climax is bereft of dialogue, and instead implements blaring music, which is guaranteed to instil a great sense discomfort in viewers.

Not only does Annihilation explain very little, it rarely gives the audience time to process what they're watching. Every time viewers try to comprehend what's going on, the film throws in some nightmare fuel, which nobody is ready for (especially the skull-bear sequence).

Just as it looks like the kaleidoscopic narrative is wrapping up, the last few seconds throws in an unexpected detail that leaves everyone bewildered long after the credits roll.
