10 Most Controversial Comedies Of All Time
1. Borat: Cultural Learnings Of America For Make Benefit Glorious Nation Of Kazakhstan
Oh how the Western World adored Sacha Baron Cohen's goofy, racist, misogynistic, and unsettlingly hairy Borat back in 2006. For years afterward it was "Very niiice" this and "Wow-whoa-wewa!" that, especially in the United States.
In Arab countries? Not so much. Every single Arab country - besides Lebanon, for some reason - banned Borat from theatres on account of it being "vile, gross, and extremely ridiculous". It didn't play so well in Russia, either, where it became the first non-pornographic film to be banned in the country since the collapse of the Soviet Union. Strangely enough, Kazakhstan - where the character of Borat is purported to be from - merely encouraged cinemas not to show the film.
There was also significant backlash from the real people show had been duped by Borat's charade in the film. Cohen was sued by several displeased "marks", including the supremely racist and misogynistic frat boys that couldn't seem to stop themselves from spewing all kinds of drunken, hateful ramblings (all of these lawsuits were eventually dismissed.)
Some critics called Borat a overtly vicious "shockumentary", and others suggested the film took an anti-American stance. But that didn't stop Americans from filling cinemas, as Borat was able to rake in almost $130 million domestically.
