10 Most Controversial Directors Of All Time

7. Gaspar Noe

irreMost Controversial Film: Irreversible A provocative filmmaker by nature, Gaspar Noe is fast becoming one of the most unique auteurs in cinema. He shot to worldwide attention with his 2003 film, Irreversible, a picture most famous for its unbroken rape scene that lasts nearly 10 minutes. There were reports of people passing out whilst watching Irreversible, it is that distressing. It's an intense experience unlike any other and that lengthy rape scene is unbearable to most of the audience. Charges of homophobia were also issued against the film as the rapist is found to be a gay man. Gaspar Noe countered these claims by saying that he is featured in the gay club scene masturbating to show he is not above homosexuals. Noe's dream project Enter the Void was also the subject of controversy, as it shared the same extreme aesthetic of Irreversible. We are greeted with countless shots of nudity and graphic sex, much of it alongside the theme of incest. Noe is a modern-day provocateur who treads the line between art and exploitation very carefully, and he will continue to make controversial movies for many years.
