10 Most Criminally Underrated Blockbusters Since 2000
7. The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010)
Here at WhatCulture, we remember a bygone age whenever the release of a new Nicolas Cage film was something to be anticipated. Alas, this is not the case these days, with each new Cage picture being greeted with derision and mockery, most of the time before anyone has even seen the film. The Sorcerer's Apprentice debuted in summer 2010, back when Cage was in the dying days of his pull as a box-office star. It made $215 million worldwide on a budget of $150 million, so it did manage to turn a profit, but the damning statistic is that only $63 million came from the US box-office. It seemed audience's had begun to turn against Cage, and the thought of him donning another regrettable wig and capering around in a sword and sorcery adventure didn't appeal to the amount of viewers it once would have. If they had gone to see the film, they would have found a charming and fun story, ably performed by Cage, Jay Baruchel and Alfred Molina as the dastardly villain. The film really is the sort of thing that families can all enjoy together; the perfect Sunday afternoon watch. Perhaps it was too old-fashioned in its story-telling for modern audiences.
