10 Most Criminally Underrated British Horror Movies

3. Peeping Tom

Unbeknownst to many, Peeping Tom is arguably the inception of the slasher genre - beating out Psycho in 1960 by a good few months and condemning director Michael Powell as a pariah of the industry. Whilst filmmakers can do whatever they really want in terms of gory horror nowadays, 60 years ago, censorship was a lot different, resulting in an incredibly harsh response and a ban in some countries for its 'explicit content'.

Featuring a serial killer who utilises his camera as a weapon, Mark murders women and films their dying moments to rewatch after the event. A voyeur, a psychopath, and a particularly realistic filmmaker, Mark wants to capture true moments of fear for a documentary, and does so with an exacting precision you never knew a tripod could manage.

In the years since release, Peeping Tom has gained a cult following and is now regarded and one of the best British movies to come from our tiny isles, but it still has nowhere near as much renown as its competition. Expertly crafted both visually and in its narrative, fans of classic horror will revel in this somewhat forgotten gem.
