10 Most Cringeworthy Performances From Otherwise Great Actors

8. Brie Larson - Kong: Skull Island

Recent years have seen Brie Larson enjoy the kind of upward career trajectory that all actors dream of, with her Oscar-winning turn in 2015's Room, and her casting in the title role of the highly anticipated Captain Marvel.

Given that rapid increase in profile, it's only logical that Larson would land a few more big roles in the interim, hence she was cast alongside Tom Hiddleston in 2017's Kong: Skull Island, a reboot of the iconic monster movie set in the same universe as 2014's Godzilla.

There's a lot to be said in favour of Kong: Skull Island. It's fast-paced, gorgeous to look at, and has tons of great monster-on-monster action.

However, one thing it clearly isn't is a great character-driven drama. As director Jordan Vogt-Roberts acknowledged with surprising bluntness in the Honest Trailer, the film utterly squanders its cast on underwritten, two-dimensional roles.

Sadly, no one comes off worse than Larson, who spends most of the film looking dazed and confused, staring with ridiculously wide eyes at stuff that obviously wasn't really there, whilst fighting a losing battle with some terrible dialogue; it's hard to think of a more flatly-delivered line than "I've taken enough photos of mass graves to recognise one."
