10 Most Disappointing Horror Movie Sequels
5. The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It
The Conjuring Universe is no stranger to the highest of
highs and the lowest of lows. Whilst The Nun and 2014’s Annabelle were the
latter, we still have the first two cinematic adventures of Ed and Lorraine
Warren to soften the blow.
It’s understandable then, that people were really quite excited for the third entry. However, given how brilliant the first two Conjuring movies were, 2021’s The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It had a lot to live up to.
Sadly, it didn’t manage it. Whilst it centred around one of the most interesting and controversial case investigated by the Warrens, the trial of Arne Cheyenne Johnson, the tagline (‘the demonic case that shocked America’) was a bit of an empty promise. The usually slick and clever jumpscares were lukewarm at best, the previously terrifying villains now shallow horror archetypes and it lacked that chilling atmosphere.
Without the reliable chemistry and charm of Vera Farmiga and
Patrick Wilson, the film would’ve been far more disappointing. It isn’t
terrible, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the first two films in the franchise.
