10 Most Disappointing Horror Movies Of The Decade (So Far)
1. The Boy
The Boy has a neat premise: an American nanny (Lauren Cohan) travels to England to look after an eccentric couple’s son, who turns out to be a doll she’s required to treat as though it were real. Cast in the likeness of a child who died 20 years ago, the doll appears to be alive and capable of moving around when not being watched.
This was director William Brent Bell’s fourth genre film, and while it’s a quantum leap from his laughably awful Stay Alive (2006), it still lacks sufficient fire to make it a truly memorable experience. What harms the film the most is that it's basically a short film expanded to feature length.
The Boy has one good idea it stretches to breaking point and Bell seems to know it, so he compensates for the lack of plot by throwing in every horror cliché he can think of. There’s The Old Dark House, the it-was-only-a-dream false scare and that old standby, the scene where the heroine takes a shower. Before you ask, yes she does wander off alone down a dark corridor wearing only a towel.
