10 Most Disappointing Movies Of 2019 (So Far)
2. Polar
What It Promised
If you got serious John Wick vibes fromt he marketing for Netflix's Polar, it won't have been by accident. In the wake of Keanu Reeves' rejuvenation of himself and the assassin sub-genre, Netflix looked to score a slice of the lucrative pie by adapting the Polar webcomic.
This should have been a metal joy, with Jonas Akerlund and Mads Mikkelsen teaming up for a sort of Leon meets Kill Bill murderfest about a retired assassin hunted by his former employers seeking to permanently end their retirement trustees by killing them.
But Really...
Somehow, the film conspires to throw away all of its promise by being both too dull and too weird for its own good. The idea that anyone could somehow waste the premise of Mikkelsen as a stone cold assassin fighting off hordes of his own kind is just unfeasible and yet here we are.
Perhaps it has something to do with the fact that Matt Lucas was chosen as the villain? He sits somewhere between The Hunger Games and a Terry Gilliam nightmare and his performance is the crowning, rotten cherry on a film that seems to aspire to be so ugly it's unwatchable.
