What? Were you expecting to see a different Alien vs. Predator film here? Sorry, that would be too predictable.
Sure, 2004's AVP may not have lived up to the decade of hype, but there were enough silver linings in that film to make it an enjoyable offering if nothing else. The same cannot, however, be said for the sequel AVP: Requiem, which failed to capitalize on, well, everything.
Taking the most promising thing about its predecessor - the Predalien cliffhanger - and making a whole film about it was certainly a brilliant idea, but the execution was all over the place - and what could have been a highly engaging science fiction follow-up that justified AVP's existence in the first place was instead a mindless slasher far too reliant on gratuitous gore, undermining both of the Alien and Predator franchises in the process.
It's hard to argue that the Predalien itself wasn't visually great... well, it would be if you could actually see anything. The film's dark colour palette made it incredibly hard to see what was actually happening, and the choppy editing didn't help either.
Flawed as it was, AVP felt like a big-budget cinematic smackdown. This felt like a direct-to-DVD sequel.
