10 Most Disappointing Sci-Fi Movie Sequels Ever

3. S. Darko

Terminator 3
20th Century Fox Home Entertainment

Donnie Darko is undoubtedly one of the biggest cult classics of all time. A critically-acclaimed masterpiece that understandably divided audiences - most loved it, but others were left wondering what the hell was going on - it left us asking so many questions by the time the credits had rolled, as we couldn't help but get drawn into Donnie's story and his doomsday-ish visions. The same cannot be said for the sequel nobody asked for: S. Darko.

Focusing on Donnie's little sister - now all grown up - the film attempts to further the story of the original by using Samantha's similar experiences. Unnecessary as it seemed, it could have offered up some more compelling character-driven material and linked it all back to Donnie's experiences, but all it does is rehash the story beats of the first film without any of its insight - and in the process, it ends up undercutting the open-ended mysteries of its predecessor.

It's hard to be disappointed by something that should have never even been made, but somehow, this baffling follow-up pulled it off.
