5. Degloving - Gerald's Game
In Gerald's Game, Jessie (Carla Gugino) and her husband (Bruce Greenwood) head to a remote cabin to spice up their sex life after suffering marital problems. After Gerald handcuffs his wife to the bed, he suffers a lethal heart attack. Since no one knows where they are, Jessie realises she'll die if she doesn't break free.
As interesting as the premise is, this Stephen King adaptation could be pretty boring considering most of the plot revolves around one character wriggling on a bed. But thanks to Mike Flanagan's direction and Gugino's career-best performance, Gerald's Game is never dull.
Unsurprisingly, the most riveting moment (as well as the grossest) is the way Jessie escapes. After shattering a glass, our heroine deliberately slashes her wrist with the shard. She then rips the skin off her hand, so its thin enough to squeeze through the cuff.
As convincing as the hand prosthetic looks, it's Gugino's performance that makes viewers avert their eyes. As horrible as it is to watch her hand become nothing more than a flap of loose skin, it's the way Gugino writhes in agony that makes viewers wince.
