10 Most Disorientating Horror Films

3. Possessor

Rabbits Inland Empire
Signature Entertainment

Certainly if you’re a fan of WhatCulture Horror, you’ll be very familiar with this one. Brandon Cronenberg’s 2020 release was his second venture into feature film, following his debut with Antiviral (2012). Both films are equally upsetting and impressive in their own rights, and with Possessor’s interesting high concept, audiences were definitely hooked from the offset.

The film follows an assassin who carries out her missions by having her consciousness inserted into other bodies. Using her host meatsuit she carries out her assigned killings then forces the host to commit suicide, thus releasing her consciousness back into her own body. Bleak? Yes. Cool? Also very much yes.

Unexpectedly she encounters a problem on a routine mission, in which her host body manages to retain enough control over his body to prevent her from committing her proxy suicide. This leaves her stuck in the host body with the host consciousness fighting back, and unsurprisingly leading to some really dysphoric and unnerving happenings.

Andrea Riseborough has already appeared once on this list and she’s here again for good reason, as she consistently stuns with her performances as these messed-up, broken characters.
