Kingsman: The Golden Circle was a film that on paper looked like it would be a perfect sequel which would be able to include some worldbuilding by introducing the Kingman's American counterpart the Statesman while answering the mystery of how Colin Firth's Harry Hart survived after his supposed demise in the first film.

However, on both these counts the film failed to deliver, as Harry Hart is brought back to life in seconds by a ridiculous magic nano-tech kit and the Statesman made up of Channing Tatum, Halle Berry and Jeff Bridges are barely used. Amongst this chaos, we are also randomly introduced to Elton John who swears a lot, wears his most flamboyant outfits and - in one of the most cringe inducing sequences put to film - kicks a man in the face before winking directly at the camera.

Matthew Vaughn, director of the Kingsman franchise, has been very vocal about how he had attempted to persuade Elton John to be in the first Kingsman movie before finally convincing him to appear in its sequel. One question remains though: why? His presence feels so random, like an embarrassing elderly relative who accidentally wandered into frame and the director forgot to cut out in the final edit.
