Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales is a fairly fun entry into the franchise after its joyless predecessor On Stranger Tides, but it is still a film which failed to capture the magic of the initial trilogy.

Cameos strangely became a large part of the latest three films in the franchise which began with Keith Richards playing Captain Jack's father, an affectionate tip of the hat to how Johnny Depp based his performance on this legendary Rolling Stones member.

However, On Stranger Tides included a strange scene of Captain Jack momentarily seducing Judi Dench which Dead Man Tell No Tales felt obliged to top by featuring Paul McCartney dressed in pirate garb interacting with Captain Jack in a jail cell.

Like Elton John in Kingsman: The Golden Circle this is another example of a pop icon who was given a bizarre cameo in a big blockbuster film but at least they tried to disguise McCartney in a pirate costume.

However, they may as well have not bothered because from the second he opens his mouth in his one minute cameo you can hear the distinctive scouse dulcet tones of the former Beatle. It is a funny - if incredibly random - scene but one of the most baffling decisions to cast McCartney seemingly for no other reason than it's Paul McCartney.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
