10 Most Distracting Cameos In 21st Century Films

2. James Franco - Alien: Covenant

Alien: Covenant is a film which clearly was trying to course correct after audience's tepid response to Prometheus. This is clear from its title alone which reclaims the 'Alien' title back as if desperately trying to convince audiences that this was a return to the original films they loved.

While the flick is a largely entertaining, if quite dumb, action film it is marred by one moment which is extremely perplexing. Make that two moments if you include the laughable line Michael Fassbender delivers as he says to his clone who begins playing the flute: "I'll do the fingering".

James Franco makes a surprise cameo in a two minute video recording which succeeds in taking the audience out of the movie as they realise the unseen deceased Captain of the ship was the New Goblin all along.

There is actually an interesting prequel to Alien: Covenant entitled 'The Last Supper' which explores, more than the film ever does, the crew's dynamics and shows Franco as the dominant Captain of the ship. Ridley Scott's decision to take this scene out of the movie and relegate it to an online prequel, which the majority of the audience will not have seen, is a terrible choice and makes Franco's appearance halfway through the movie all the more distracting.
