10 Most Distracting Cameos In 21st Century Films

1. Matt Damon - All His Cameos

Thor Ragnarok
Warner Bros.

Over the last few decades, Matt Damon has garnered a reputation as the King of Cameos across a wide range of films. These range from his surprising reveal in Interstellar as Dr Mann or his blink-and-you'll-miss it appearance as an Asgardian actor playing Loki in Thor: Ragnarok.

However, the problem with this is that his presence is too big and revealing him suddenly and then getting rid of him even quicker just results in you turning to your fellow audience member and asking "was that Matt Damon?" Admittedly his cameos work fairly well in comedies, from his redneck character in Deadpool 2 to playing a nearly unrecognisable punk rocker in Eurotrip. When he makes these unannounced appearances during a dramatic endeavour this works against the film as his status as a big Hollywood actor eclipses everything else.

For the most egregious example of this see his three minute turn as Detective Ferguson in Steven Soderbergh's iPhone-shot film Unsane where he is by far the biggest star who appears in the entire runtime.

Hopefully Matt Damon will stick to leading roles and the occasional comedy cameo because the Oscar-winning actor is simply too established to expect an audience not to be distracted by Jason Bourne popping up in a Christopher Nolan film.

An avid cinephile, love Trainspotting (the film, not the hobby), like watching bad films ironically (The Room, Cats) and hate my over-reliance on brackets (they’re handy for a quick aside though).
