Hatching follows teenage gymnast Tinja, who's become increasingly agitated by her mother's callous and vapid behaviour. When Tinja finds a mysterious egg, she gives it the maternal care she herself desperately craves.

Within days, the egg hatches, releasing a skeletal-like bird, which Tinja names Alli. When the newborn murders the neighbour's annoying dog, Tinja realises the two are psychically linked, causing Alli to instinctively act upon her "mother's" subconscious desires.

Just to makes things worse, Alli begins to mutate, developing a physical resemblance to Tinja. Despite Alli's erratic and violent behaviour, Tinja does everything she can to protect her.

When Tinja's mother is attacked by Alli, she attempts to stab the doppelgänger with a knife. Tinja leaps in front of her child, causing her to be stabbed instead. As she dies, Alli's metamorphosis finalises, so she looks like a perfect replica of her host. Just before the screen cuts to black, the Tinja clone cries out "Mother".

So, what happened? Did the family accept Alli and pass her off as their daughter? Did they kill her? Did Alli kill them? Did Allie leave to try and live her own life?

Unless there's a sequel, these questions won't be answered any time soon.
