It Follows is a stylish, 1980s inspired, psychological horror film which deals with a sexually-transmitted 'disease'. The plot is wonderfully simple, as the monstrous 'disease' which can disguise itself as anyone, slowly pursues the infected individual until catching up with and killing them. In other words IT FOLLOWS. Protagonist Jay contracts the disease after a sexual encounter with an older boy and must spend the rest of the film running from it.

In the end she devises a plan to trap the monster in a public swimming pool and and electrocuting it to death. Although it goes rather awry, eventually the monster is seemingly killed after a bullet to the head and a pool filling with blood.

The final shot of the film shows the young couple Jay and Paul walking down a street hand in hand as an unidentified figure FOLLOWS slowly behind. The brilliance in this ending is the obvious ambiguity, it is left open to interpretation whether the monster is back or not. It parallels excellently the real struggles of living with a disease and the risk of its return.
