10 Most Divisive Movies Of 2016
2. Warcraft
Barring perhaps a few diehard game fans, it’s pretty much safe to say that Warcraft was universally dismissed in the Western hemisphere by both critics and moviegoers alike.
Or at least in the US where reviewers called it ridiculous and moviegoers rewarded it with a paltry $47.4 million in box office takings against a production budget of $160 million. But try convincing China – where it was a massive hit and grossed a whopping $220 million, over half of its total global profit – that it’s a bad film
Technically, taking its budget into account, Warcraft is still a commercial flop even with China’s help. Nevertheless, Chinese moviegoers have spoken and their consensus is that Warcraft was great. Debatable as that might be, if anything Warcraft’s massive success in China is proof of the growing importance of the Chinese box office in Hollywood filmmaking.
