10 Most Divisive Sci-Fi Films Of The 21st Century
5. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
The conversation surrounding the eighth instalment of the Skywalker Saga The Last Jedi is perhaps the ultimate example of a sci-fi film which divided some critics, an audience and a whole fanbase.
While the discussion around Rian Johnson's 'polarising' Star Wars film has become rather tiresome and in some cases toxic it would be irresponsible to not include this entry on a list of the most divisive sci-fi films of the 21st century. Critics response was initially incredibly positive to this bold departure from The Force Awakens, which had been somewhat criticised for being essentially a carbon copy of A New Hope, but the same could not be said for the fanbase.
Whether it was taking some interesting creative decisions, featuring more female characters or some of the awkward humour (or all three) some sections of the audience lashed out against this new direction resulting in an audience score of 42% on Rotten Tomatoes. While it turns out that this extremely low audience score was the result of 'review bombing', deliberately sabotaging a film's good reviews with bad ones led by bots and angry fanboys, it is an undeniable fact that The Last Jedi is a contentious issue to bring up in conversation.
