10. The Hanging Tree - Sinister (2012)
As good a movie as Scott Derrickson's 2012 supernatural flick Sinister is (featuring a superbly strange performance from Ethan Hawke as well as the creation of a potential franchise-starting villain in the shape of the, er, sinister Mr. Boogie) the context of an obsessive writer moving his family into a house that was the site of a series of murders is unnecessary when taking a glimpse of this stark, sad image. Four people hanged and hooded - probably an entire family, dangling from a damaged tree, rigged to kill all four simultaneously. It's a cold tragedy that should have you loosening the top button of your shirt already.
