5. Coco Remembers - Coco

As a first for Pixar, Coco is their first musical feature to date and with its song “Remember Me”, it brings one of its mot heavy weight emotional scenes in Pixar history. When we first hear the song sung by Ernesto de la Cruz, it is upbeat and romantic, showcasing him as a character as full of vanity, and flaunting his fame. Later in the movie we hear the song again but taken on a new form - a sort of lullaby by Héctor that he sings for Coco.

We listen to the true interpretation of the lyrics and the softer guitar melody, not the stolen version Ernesto had twisted and lost all meaning too. Desperate to keep Héctor’s spirit alive in the Land of the Dead, Miguel must make Coco remember her father.

The scene is emotional enough, with Miguel begging to his grandma to remember him, showing her his guitar, and a photograph, but nothing works. All hope feels lost as Miguel breaks down, but he tries one last time, playing ‘Remember Me’ to Coco, as Héctor did in the past.

As Miguel’s face, Coco’s face slowly begins to soften and come alive, remembering the tune of her childhood. She sings along to the shock of the rest of her family, and smiles brightly with welling tears. Not only does this scene carry the importance of memory, and how if we never forget someone they’re never really gone, but it gives the opportunity for watchers to think of their own loved ones who have gone, and just how precious those memories are.
