Previously a student at Durmstrang, Grindelwald was known for his experimentation with dark magic and his attacks upon other students.

Following his expulsion, he and Dumbledore envisioned a world in which wizards and witches dominated the non-magical population. However, after an incident which resulted in the death of Dumbledore’s sister, Grindelwald left Britain to pursue his goals alone.

Once he had obtained the Elder Wand form Gregorovitch, Grindelwald quickly amassed plenty of followers who shared his ideology, resulting in several incidences of mass murder across Europe.

His ruthlessness is unveiled still further in Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, where he has no hesitation in murdering a multitude of Aurors, as well as Newt’s childhood friend, Leta Lestrange.
