Development of a follow-up to 2016's Star Trek Beyond has been arduous enough that it even has its own Wikipedia page.

After the third entry into J.J. Abrams' reboot franchise was a box office disappointment despite solid reviews, Paramount toyed with a number of Star Wars projects, including a continuation of the Abrams continuity, a new version from Fargo creator Noah Hawley, and even a standalone movie directed by Quentin Tarantino.

In March, Paramount announced that they had hired Star Trek: Discovery writer Kalinda Vazquez to pen a new Trek film from her own original concept, with Abrams set to produce.

But this past month, Paramount quietly scheduled an untitled Star Trek film to release on June 9, 2023, without elaborating on whether this was Vazquez's embryonic movie or something different yet again. Paramount only confirmed that it was a "top secret" project with Abrams producing.

Even so, a new Trek movie is finally on the studio's calendar for the first time in years, meaning that pre-production will likely get underway soon (if it hasn't already) ahead of a probable 2022 shoot.
