10 Most Expensive Horror Movies Ever Produced

7. Hollow Man - $95 Million

World War Z
Columbia Pictures

Taking inspiration from H. G. Wells' 1897 novel The Invisible Man, Hollow Man blurs the lines between sci-fi and horror and follows the story of Dr. Sebastian Caine, a brilliant but overly-ambitious scientist that has developed a serum for turning people invisible.

Volunteering himself as the first test subject, Dr. Caine is slowly driven insane by his invisibility and the power it brings him. He goes on a killing rampage, but the true horror in the film really comes about from the sight of the deranged scientist as a anatomically correct CGI animation of a human body or floating around with just a pink wax mask visible.

Starring Kevin Bacon and Elisabeth Shue, the bulk of this film's $95 million budget naturally went on ensuring the CGI and visuals were above par for the time. Famously the film spent $50 million on visual effects on their own, with the elevator explosion at the climax of the film also requiring fourteen cameras to capture.

Whilst these effects were generally praised, the rest of the film wasn't very well received by critics. The film holds just a 28% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, though that hasn't stopped it from making well over $190.2 million since its release.
