10 Most Expensive Horror Movies Ever Produced

6. What Lies Beneath - $100 Million

World War Z
20th Century Fox

Harrison Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer were two of the most acclaimed, accomplished and high-profile stars of their day when they signed onto the horror film What Lies Beneath in 2000. With that fame comes a pretty chunky price tag however. $30 million between just the pair of them to be exact. With that price tag hanging over the salaries of just two of the film's stars, it's maybe a decent achievement that the budget for the rest of the film would only rise to $100 million.

What Lies Beneath follows the story of Claire and Norman, a married couple that begin to notice some strange goings on with their two neighbours one day. Unease and uncertainty around the couple begins to grow as the supernatural horror elements of the film become more pronounced, and the film's eventual twist during the finale is easily the highlight of the runtime.

Despite the strong performance from Pfeiffer and Ford, there's not a whole that makes this a memorable or remarkable addition to the horror genre. Whilst it did make a box office of $291.4 million, the reviews for What Lies Beneath were fairly mixed and it's certainly not gone onto establish itself as an absolute must-watch by any means.
