10 Most Expensive Horror Movies Ever Produced
5. Prometheus - $130 Million
The Alien series is one of the most beloved in all of horror movie history. Well, the first two are at least. Ridley Scott's original film was one of the most genuinely terrifying film of its day, chilling audiences with its suspenseful build up, claustrophobic setting and largely unseen monster.
After a couple of lacklustre sequels and crossovers during the 90s and mid-2000s, excitement in the series was rejuvenated by the news that Scott would be returning to the franchise with a prequel film called Prometheus. Sharing a name with the mythological God supposedly responsible for creating humanity, Prometheus is one of the most layered and ambitious films ever released. Dealing with huge wider ideas around where we came from and why we're here, it features some of the most breathtaking direction from behind Scott's camera and adds a huge amount of lore to the Alien universe.
It also cost an absolute bomb to make at $130 million.
Though some fans and critics found Prometheus to be light on the Xenomorphs and overly-heavy on the unresolved plot points, the performances from the likes of Michael Fassbender, Idris Elba and Noomi Rapace, as well as Scott's undeniably awesome directorial performance, was enough to see it green light a sequel and walk off with a box office of over $400 million.
