7. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre - Dinner With The Sawyer Family
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9sfs1ix-nNc The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is a film that relies on the atmosphere of its setup to frighten the audience and everything else falls into place. The dinner scene is a perfect testament to this because it is the culmination of everything the movie has been leading up to. Sally is the only one of her friends who is left alive and the audience is just waiting for her to be captured because they know it is imminent. While it is expected that Sally is captured what happens to her once she is captured is completely unexpected. She is tied to a chair and surrounded by the most deranged family in all of film history. There's Leatherface, the hitchhiker from earlier in the film, the owner of the barbecue restaurant that makes its food with human meat and the old man of the family who looks like he's one breath away from death. The way that Tobe Hooper captures the utterly deranged feeling of this scene is brilliant. He frequently cuts to a close up on Sally's eye where her veins match with the red and brown tones of the house which adds a very creepy layer to the scene. The scariest thing about it is the way the movie cuts quickly from a tortured Sally to the family laughing at her pain. Movie scenes don't get any more bleak than this one.

My favorite movies are Before Sunrise, Pulp Fiction, 2001: A Space Odyssey, Alien and Her so don't be surprised to see those pop up in my writing from time to time. I'm currently in school for Journalism/English and I have an obsession with all things cinematic on the side.
