10 Most Gratuitous Citywide Destructions In Movie History

7. Los Angeles - San Andreas)

Godzilla Statue Of Liberty

The first of two appearances for the City of Angels on this list - and the one where Kylie Minogue is one of its victims - the California locale has been another favourite of filmmakers over the years as a prospective target, with its position near a major faultline presenting ample opportunity to pitch it head first as a victim of natural disasters.

Brad Peyton's film takes that to its logical extreme, complete with Dwayne Johnson as a fire and rescue pilot trying to do his best amid the plentiful wreckage of both LA and the wider Bay Area - and while the majority of its ultimate carnage takes place in the latter, the former gets a brief and effective beating from a 9.6 magnitude earthquake.

(Peyton and Johnson would duly total Chicago in their great big monster movie Rampage only a few years later, where the latter played the most buff primatologist in cinematic history.)

Something of a culture vulture, Mr Steel can historically be found in three places; the local cinema, the local stadium or the local chip shop. He is an avowed fan of franchise films, amateur cricket and power-chords.
