Compared to plenty of its brethren on this list, Tim Burton's affectionate fifties alien invasion pastiche doesn't quite boast the seismic spectacle of some disaster movies - though it does boast Tom Jones, automatically ensuring its consideration in all self-respecting sci-fi lists from here on out.

Regardless, it's a tongue-in-cheek takedown of Sin City, with casinos toppled and hotels imploded with as much gusto as anything else on this list - and arguably, the double Oscar nominee makes it stick even more with his relatively low-budget approach, fully leaning into the more goofy elements of such wanton destruction with a camp-gilded edge.

It may not be the most dazzling - but its extraterrestrials hit one target after the other, it proves a determined contender to keep up.
