6. The Launch – Interstellar

Han Solo Death
Warner Bros. Pictures/Paramount Pictures

If you can honestly say that at no point did Interstellar bring tears to your eyes, then you might just be a robot.

There are numerous points at which Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic might have left you an emotional wreck, but one of the biggest comes incredibly early on.

After establishing protagonist Cooper and his status as both a brilliant engineer and single father, we learn of NASA's mission to find humanity a new home among the stars, and Coop discovers that he might just be vitally important for the mission.

For reasons of relativity, Coop knows its unlikely that he'll ever see his family again, but he chooses to go anyway in order to try to find an appropriate planet for colonisation. Naturally, his daughter is pretty upset, and she refuses to say goodbye, leading to a gut-wrenching scene in which Coop drives away from the family home, his daughter emerging from the house moments too late.

The scene is acted to perfection by Matthew McConaughey and Mackenzie Foy, and over it all, we simply hear the countdown for the launch. Absolutely haunting.
