3. Yondu's Goodbye – Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2

Han Solo Death
Marvel Studios

After Groot's sacrifice in the first film, it seemed that Vol. 2 would have its work cut out to match it. In the end, it delivered by using one - or three - of the film's central themes against us.

After discovering that his biological father Ego is a Celestial, an ancient and supremely powerful being, Peter Quill begins to build a relationship with him.

However, it's soon revealed the Ego is using Quill, and that Yondu actually chose to raise Quill (at great personal cost) in order to spare him the grisly fate that Ego had planned for him.

After coming back to rescue Quill (again), Yondu sacrifices himself to save his adoptive son's life, telling him, "He may be your father, but I'm your daddy."

And, just when you've gotten a handle on your blubbing, the Ravagers who had disowned Yondu show up to give him an epic send-off to acknowledge his sacrifice.

The film's themes of parenthood, sacrifice and the father-son relationship all come together to make for a hard-hitting emotional climax that you won't likely forget any time soon.
