In 1977, George Lucas' Star Wars launched a franchise that changed the way movies were made, and it generated more fans than any movie that ever came before... and many might argue, after as well. Star Wars had two sequels, and it became an institution of pop culture the likes of which had never been seen before.

With the last film, Return of the Jedi, having been released in 1983, fans were eager for any new entry in the franchise. Years passed, and all anyone got were some updated copies of the older movies, which were labeled as "Special Edition," but it didn't scratch the itch.

Then, in 1999, the world finally got exactly what it wanted: George Lucas created an entirely new movie! This time, it was a prequel called Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, and the hype was so intense, it could easily be described as the most hyped film of all time.

The fans had built up so many expectations, it became impossible to deliver on most of them. As a result, the film (and it's two sequels) have been lambasted by fans despite the fact that they raked in billions of dollars. While they were financially successful, many fans would insist the hype was not worth what was ultimately delivered.
